Step 1: Requirements and measurements
Everything starts with two things: what you want, and your measurements. The requirement side covers the fit you are after (straight, slim, relaxed), the denim weight, the wash, and any details like pocket style or hardware.
Measurements are taken at the waist, hip, thigh, knee, inseam and outseam. Accuracy matters more than anything else at this stage — see our measurement guide for how to take each one correctly.
Step 2: Fabric selection
Next comes the denim itself. The main decisions are weight, composition and wash.
- Weight determines how structured and durable the jeans feel. Our denim weight guide covers the full range.
- Composition is usually pure cotton or cotton with a small percentage of elastane. This is the stretch versus rigid decision.
- Wash and finish control the final appearance — raw, rinsed, stone washed, or a specific shade.
Step 3: Pattern making
Your measurements are translated into a pattern — the set of shapes that will be cut from the fabric. This is where custom work differs fundamentally from alterations. A ready-made pair is a standard pattern adjusted afterwards; a custom pair is a pattern built around your measurements from the start.
Step 4: Sampling and fit confirmation
Before full production, the fit is confirmed with you. This step exists so that any adjustment happens before the final pair is cut and stitched, not after. For brand and manufacturer orders, this is the stage where a sample is approved before a production run begins.
Step 5: Cutting and stitching
The fabric is cut to the confirmed pattern and stitched together. Details like seam construction, stitching thread, rivets and buttons are applied at this stage according to what was specified earlier.
Step 6: Finishing and quality check
The finished jeans are pressed, any wash treatment is applied, and the pair is checked before dispatch. Checks cover stitching consistency, measurements against the confirmed specification, and fabric faults.
How long does it take?
Timelines depend on the fabric, the wash, and whether it is a single pair or a production run. Sampling is the stage that most affects the schedule, since it involves confirmation from you. For an accurate timeline for your specific requirement, it is best to ask directly.
