Denim Care Guide: How to Wash Jeans and Make Them Last

Most jeans do not wear out — they are worn out by washing. A few small changes to how you wash and dry denim will add years to it.

How often should you wash jeans?

Far less often than most people assume. Denim does not need washing after every wear. Unless they are visibly dirty or smell, jeans can typically go several wears between washes.

Frequent washing is what causes fading, shrinkage and the gradual loss of shape. Airing jeans out between wears handles most everyday freshness.

The basic washing rules

  • Turn them inside out. This protects the outer surface from abrasion in the drum and slows fading.
  • Use cold water. Hot water accelerates fading and shrinkage, and damages elastane in stretch denim.
  • Use a mild detergent, and less of it. Harsh detergents strip indigo. Avoid bleach entirely.
  • Wash with similar colours. Especially important for the first few washes of dark denim.
  • Use a gentle cycle. Long, aggressive cycles do more damage than the dirt they remove.

Drying is where most damage happens

Tumble drying is the single hardest thing you can do to a pair of jeans. The combination of heat and mechanical action shrinks cotton and degrades elastane.

Air dry instead. Hang jeans by the waistband or lay them flat, and keep them out of direct harsh sunlight, which fades the indigo unevenly. They will take longer to dry, but the fabric lasts substantially longer.

Caring for stretch denim specifically

Stretch denim needs more care than rigid denim, because elastane is heat-sensitive. Never tumble dry stretch jeans, and always wash cold. Once elastane has broken down, the jeans stop recovering their shape — they stay baggy at the knee and seat regardless of washing.

Our guide on stretch versus rigid denim explains the composition difference in more detail.

Raw denim is a different case

Raw denim is unwashed at the point of sale. Enthusiasts often delay the first wash deliberately, so the fabric moulds to the wearer and develops personal fade patterns. If you go this route, air the jeans regularly and spot-clean marks rather than washing the whole garment.

There is no requirement to do this — it is a preference, not a rule. A first wash will simply produce more even fading.

Dealing with stains and odour

  • Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth rather than washing the whole pair.
  • Air them out overnight to handle most odour without water.
  • Avoid the freezer trick. Freezing does not reliably kill the bacteria that cause odour — washing does.

Storage

Hang jeans by the waistband or fold them along the existing creases. Avoid storing them compressed under heavy items for long periods, which sets permanent creases into the fabric.
