How to Choose Fabric for School and Corporate Uniforms

Uniform fabric has a harder job than most fabric. It is worn daily, washed constantly, and has to look identical across hundreds of people and several years of repeat orders.

The four requirements that actually matter

Uniform fabric selection comes down to four things, in roughly this order of importance:

  • Durability. Daily wear plus frequent washing is a demanding cycle.
  • Colourfastness. A uniform that fades unevenly looks worse than one that wears out, because the difference is visible between individuals.
  • Comfort. Particularly for children and for staff working full shifts in Indian heat.
  • Consistency. The batch you order next year must match the one you ordered this year.

Choosing GSM for uniforms

For uniform shirting, 120–180 GSM is the practical range in most of India. Below about 120 GSM, fabric starts to become translucent and wears through at collars and cuffs. Above 180 GSM it becomes uncomfortably warm for daily wear in most Indian climates.

For uniform trousers and blazers, suiting in the 240–280 GSM range holds shape without being oppressive. See our GSM guide for the full picture.

Composition: cotton, polyester or blend

CompositionStrengthsTrade-offs
100% cottonMost comfortable, breathableCreases easily, shrinks, fades faster
Poly-cotton blendDurable, holds colour, low maintenanceLess breathable than pure cotton
100% polyesterVery durable, colourfast, cheapPoor breathability, uncomfortable in heat

For most school and corporate uniform programmes in India, a poly-cotton blend is the standard compromise. It survives repeated institutional washing far better than pure cotton while remaining wearable in heat.

Colour consistency across orders

This is the issue that causes the most complaints, and it is worth raising with your supplier before you order rather than after.

Dye lots vary. Fabric dyed in different batches can differ subtly in shade — invisible on a single garment, obvious when two people stand next to each other. To manage this:

  • Order the full quantity you need in one lot where possible
  • Keep a reference swatch from your original order for future matching
  • Tell your supplier upfront that this is a repeat uniform programme

Shrinkage

Uniforms are washed more than almost any other garment, so shrinkage compounds quickly. Confirm whether the fabric is pre-shrunk, and what residual shrinkage percentage to expect. A 3% shrinkage across a shirt is enough to change how it fits.

Before you place the order

Get samples and wash them. Not once — several times, in the way the uniforms will actually be washed. This surfaces shrinkage, colour bleeding and pilling before you commit to a bulk quantity. Our fabric quality checklist covers what else to verify.
