What Is Fabric GSM and Why Does It Matter?

GSM is the number buyers quote most often and understand least. It is simple once explained — and knowing what it does and does not tell you will make you a better fabric buyer.

What GSM means

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the weight of one square meter of a fabric. A 150 GSM cotton means one square meter of that fabric weighs 150 grams.

Higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric. Lower GSM means a lighter, more breathable one. That is the entire concept.

Typical GSM ranges by fabric type

Why GSM matters when buying

GSM affects four things directly:

  • Drape. Heavier fabric hangs with more structure; lighter fabric flows.
  • Breathability. Lower GSM generally breathes better, which matters in Indian conditions.
  • Durability. Denser fabric usually resists wear longer, all else being equal.
  • Opacity. Very low GSM fabrics can be see-through, which is a common complaint in cheap uniform shirting.

What GSM does not tell you

This is the important part. GSM is a weight measurement, not a quality measurement. Two fabrics at the same GSM can be completely different in quality, because GSM says nothing about:

  • Yarn quality — fibre length and spinning method determine softness and pilling resistance
  • Thread count and weave — how tightly and evenly the yarn is woven
  • Composition — a 200 GSM polyester blend behaves nothing like a 200 GSM pure cotton
  • Finishing — pre-shrinking, mercerising and other treatments

A heavy fabric made from short, poor-quality fibres will pill quickly despite a high GSM. Weight is a specification; quality is separate.

Choosing GSM for Indian conditions

Climate matters more here than in most markets. For shirting worn daily in Indian heat, 120–160 GSM is generally the practical range — heavy enough to be opaque and durable, light enough to breathe. For suiting, 240–280 GSM covers most of the year in most of India, with lighter weights for summer-heavy use.

What to ask a supplier

When comparing fabric, ask for GSM alongside composition, weave, and shrinkage. GSM on its own is not enough to compare two quotes fairly. Our fabric quality checklist covers the full set of questions worth asking before a bulk order.
